PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox for GTA 6?
Short answer: all four — PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S — get GTA 6 on November 19, 2026, and Rockstar has not published a frame rate, resolution or PS5 Pro mode for any of them (checked 2026-10-26). Press reported that the console builds ran at 30 fps during development. If you own one already, keep it; if you are buying, storage is the difference you can count on.
Every spec below is the console maker's own wording, and every GTA 6 statement links to Rockstar or to the report that quotes Rockstar. Nothing here is a benchmark — the game is not out yet.
The chooser only uses the facts on this page. It does not know prices — compare them before you buy.

What actually differs for GTA 6
- Frame rate and resolution: not announced. Rockstar has not published a frame rate or resolution for any console or announced a PS5 Pro mode. Press reported in August 2026 that Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development, with any 60 fps option still undecided. (report, 2026-08-28)
- PS5 Pro: an unknown, not a guarantee. Sony says the Pro's PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing and higher frame rates appear in games "enhanced" by their creators. GTA 6 is not on any announced list, so the only Pro advantage you can count on today is the 2 TB SSD.
- "Plays best on PlayStation 5". That line is on Rockstar's GTA VI site next to the pre-order buttons. Rockstar has not said what it means in practice, so treat it as a marketing partnership, not a performance claim.
- Xbox Series S: plan your storage. About 364 GB free on the 512 GB model is enough for GTA 6 on an empty console, but not alongside many other games. Rockstar has not published the size — run your numbers in the storage calculator.
- No disc drive needed. No — the physical version of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc, and goes on sale from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading. A Digital Edition PS5 or Series S loses nothing for GTA 6.
- Codes: PlayStation is region-locked, Xbox is not. PlayStation codes only redeem on accounts from the region they were sold for, while Xbox codes are not region-locked. Prices for both stores are on where to buy GTA 6.
- PC: no date. Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 or any PC release date. A GamesBeat report of October 13, 2026, citing four anonymous sources, says a PC version is planned for Q1 2027; Rockstar has not confirmed it. PC version status.
Why Rockstar says GTA 6 is slower than GTA 5 (reported)
Reported, updated 2026-11-07: In Edge's cover story (issue 430, October 29, 2026), Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explained that more detailed worlds expose shortcuts. In his account, playing GTA 6 at GTA 5's timings made everything feel too fast, so the day-night cycle is longer. He also said GTA 5's pedestrians ignoring a drawn weapon unless you aimed it was already showing its age. In GTA 6, people react to how you carry a gun, and police give you room to back down before chasing you.
None of this is a console spec. Rockstar still lists no frame rate or resolution, so it does not change the pick above. The police side is covered in our GTA 6 wanted system guide.
Video: Rockstar Games on YouTube. It is not footage of Edge's demo. Rockstar's longer Extended Look (26:49) is age-restricted, so YouTube only plays it on YouTube. FAQ
Which console is best for GTA 6?
Rockstar has not published how GTA 6 looks or runs on any individual console. Its own site says the game "plays best on PlayStation 5" (a marketing line, not a spec), and press reported in August 2026 that the consoles were running it at 30 fps during development. If you already own a PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Series S, it will play GTA 6 on November 19 — check your free storage rather than buying new hardware.
Is GTA 6 better on PS5 Pro?
Not confirmed. Sony's PS5 Pro features (PSSR upscaling, advanced ray tracing, higher frame rates) only apply to games their developer enhances for PS5 Pro, and Rockstar has not announced a PS5 Pro mode for GTA 6. The Pro's certain advantage is its 2 TB SSD.
Can the Xbox Series S run GTA 6?
Yes. GTA 6 launches on Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox Store lists it as "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S". Microsoft rates the Series S for 1440p rather than 4K, and the 512 GB model has only about 364 GB free when empty, so you will probably need to uninstall other games first.
Does GTA 6 run at 60 fps on PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox?
Rockstar has not published a frame rate or resolution for any console or announced a PS5 Pro mode. Press reported in August 2026 that Rockstar North's Rob Nelson said the consoles were running the game at 30 fps during development, with any 60 fps option still undecided.
Do I need a console with a disc drive for GTA 6?
No — the physical version of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc, and goes on sale from November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading.
Is GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?
No — Rockstar lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as GTA 6 platforms.
Should I wait for the PC version instead?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version of GTA 6 or any PC release date. A GamesBeat report of October 13, 2026, citing four anonymous sources, says a PC version is planned for Q1 2027; Rockstar has not confirmed it.
Does it matter where I buy a GTA 6 code for PS5 or Xbox?
PlayStation codes only redeem on accounts from the region they were sold for, while Xbox codes are not region-locked. Buy a PlayStation code for the same region as your PlayStation account.
