GTA 6 storage & download calculator

Short answer: Rockstar has not published GTA 6's file size (checked 2026-10-22). Every exact GB number online is an estimate. Plan for a range: at 100 Mbps, each 100 GB takes about 2.2 hours to download at full speed.

Enter your console's free space (Settings > Storage) and your internet speed. The calculator shows, for each size scenario, whether GTA 6 fits, how much to delete, and how long it takes to download. Source for the size status: Rockstar Support.

Download times assume your full line speed; launch-week downloads are often slower. Sizes are scenarios, not leaks.

Not enough space? What each console accepts

Short answer: you cannot play GTA 6 from a USB drive on either console. To get more space you can play from, a PS5 needs an internal M.2 SSD and an Xbox Series X|S needs a Storage Expansion Card. A cheaper USB drive still helps: move other games onto it to free internal space.

ConsoleCan play GTA 6 fromStorage only (cannot play from)Source
PS5 / PS5 Slim / PS5 Pro Internal M.2 SSD slot: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe (Key M), 250 GB–8 TB, 5,500 MB/s sequential read recommended, cooling (heatsink) required, max 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick including the heatsink. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. USB extended storage (SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, 250 GB–8 TB): PS5 games can be stored there but not played — copy them back to play. PlayStation Support
Xbox Series X / Series S Internal SSD or the Storage Expansion Card that plugs into the back of the console. External USB drive (USB 3.0 or later, 128 GB or larger): games optimised for Series X|S can be stored there but must be moved back to the internal drive or Expansion Card to play. Seagate Support (maker of the Xbox Storage Expansion Card)

Requirements as published by Sony (USB extended storage, M.2 SSD) and by Seagate, maker of the Xbox Storage Expansion Card. Sony notes that not every drive meeting the spec is guaranteed to work.

FAQ

How big is GTA 6?

Rockstar has not published GTA 6's download or install size; any exact GB figure is an estimate, not an official number.

Will GTA 6 fit on a PS5?

An original 825 GB PS5 has about 667 GB usable when empty, so it can hold GTA 6 at any of the 100–250 GB scenarios on this page — the real question is how much of that space your other games already use.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

The 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB usable when empty. That is enough for every scenario here on an empty console, but you will likely need to uninstall other games first.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?

At full line speed, every 100 GB takes about 2.2 hours on a 100 Mbps connection and about 13 minutes on 1 Gbps. Real downloads are often slower at launch, which is why pre-loading from November 12 helps.

Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive or USB SSD?

No. On PS5, PS5 games can be stored on USB extended storage but not played from it; on Xbox Series X|S, games optimised for Series X|S can be stored on a USB drive but must be moved back to the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. A USB drive is still useful for parking other games to free internal space.

What SSD do I need to add storage to a PS5 for GTA 6?

A PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M) of 250 GB to 8 TB with a heatsink, fitted in the PS5's internal expansion slot. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster and limits the drive plus heatsink to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick. M.2 SATA drives do not work.

Where do these console storage numbers come from?

They are the usable capacities press measured on empty consoles (not Rockstar figures). Your console's own Settings > Storage screen is the number that matters — type it into the calculator.
